Download & Install Guide:

  1. This update is only for PCG-818 Notebooks that meet each of the following criteria:
    1. The PCG-818 has 'PCG-812(UC)' or 'PCG-812(U)' listed as the model name. This can be viewed in Sony Notebook Setup. To access Sony Notebook Setup, do the following:
      1. Click Start, point to Tool Center, and click Sony Notebook Setup
      2. Click the 'About This Computer' tab.
    2. The PCG-818 Serial number falls within one of the following ranges:

      28982730-3100001 to 28982730-3101574
      OR
      28982830-3101575 to 28982830-3102387

      NOTE: The serial numbers are located on the bottom of the Notebook.
    3. Try booting to the System Recovery CD to see if an error appears that states: 'ERROR: This recovery CD is NOT for your computer.' If the error appears, proceed with this update.
    NOTE: If the computer does not meet the above criteria, this update is not needed.
  2. Download the 818_ARCD.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
  3. Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the 818_ARCD.EXE file to begin the installation.
  4. At the first screen, click Finish. An MS-DOS box will flash on the screen briefly and then the desktop will reappear. The update is now complete and the Application Recovery CD can be used.
    NOTE:  If the computer is recovered, it will be necessary to reinstall this update to use the Application Recovery CD.

What this drivers do:

This utility resolves the "This Recovery CD is NOT for Your Computer" error message. This error may occur because some of the PCG-818 notebooks shipped with wrong model name in the embedded ROM chip which makes the Application Recovery CD unusable with the notebook.

Important Note:

  • Before installing this update, be sure the computer is running from AC power.
  • If the system is recovered, it will be necessary to reinstall this update to use the Application Recovery CD.
  • To install this upgrade, the floppy drive must be connected and a blank formatted floppy disk will be required.
  • To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
  • It is highly recommended to print out these instructions and the ReadMe.txt file that will appear as a reference during the installation process. The README.TXT file explains how to complete the upgrade using the floppy disk.
