Download & Install Guide:
- Download the USBFDD.EXE file to a temporary or download directory (please note this directory for reference).
- If the USB-Floppy Disk Drive is connected to the notebook, disconnect it.
- Go to the directory where the file was downloaded and double-click the USBFDD.EXE file to begin the installation. An "Unpacking..." box, a "Setup" box, and a DOS box will appear as the setup files are installed. Once the setup files are installed, the boxes will close automatically.
- At the "USB-FDD Driver Utility" screen, click Next to begin the installation.
- At the "Start Copying Files" screen, click Next to begin copying the files to the system. A "Setup Status" screen will appear and the setup files will be installed. Once the setup files are installed, the screen will close automatically.
- At the "FlashBuster-U Driver for Windows 98" box, click Yes to begin the driver installation.
- At the second "FlashBuster-U Driver for Windows 98" box, click Yes to restart the computer.
- At the "Setup Complete" screen, verify that "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" is selected and then click Finish to restart the computer.
- After Windows has finished restarting, connect the USB-Floppy Disk Drive to the notebook. Windows will detect the USB-Floppy Disk Drive hardware and start the Add New Hardware Wizard to install the drivers.
- At the "This wizard searches for new drivers..." screen, click Next.
- At the "What do you want Windows to do?" screen, verify that "Search for the best driver for your device. (Recommended)" is selected and then click Next.
- At the "Windows will search for new drivers in its driver database..." screen, click Next.
- At the "Windows driver file search for the device" screen, click Next.
- At the "Windows has finished installing the software..." screen, click Finish.
The installation of the updated drivers for the USB-Floppy Disk Drive is now complete.
If it is necessary to install the USB-Floppy Disk Drive Driver Utility again, you will need to first remove the USBFDD.EXE installation files. To do so, follow these steps:
- If the USB-Floppy Disk Drive is not connected to the notebook, reconnect it.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
- At the "Control Panel" window, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
- At the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" box, scroll through the list of installed software and double-click the "Y-E DATA FlashBuster-U" entry. A "Setup" box and a DOS box will appear as the setup files are installed. Once the setup files are installed, the boxes will close automatically.
- At the "Welcome" screen, select "Remove" and click Next.
- At the "Confirm File Deletion" box, click OK.
- After the files have been uninstalled, click OK to close the "Add/Remove Programs Properties" box.
- At the "Control Panel" window, double-click the System icon.
- At the "System Properties" box, click the Device Manager tab.
- In the Device Manager tab, double-click the "Universal Serial Bus Controller" category.
- Under the "Universal Serial Bus Controller" category, click the "Y-E DATA FlashBuster-U" entry to highlight it.
- Click the Remove button.
- At the "Confirm Device Removal" box, click OK.
- Click Close to exit the "System Properties" box.
- Disconnect the USB-Floppy Disk Drive from the notebook.
- Click the X in the top-right corner to close the "Control Panel" window.
- Click Start, point to Find, and click Files or Folders.
- At the "Find: All Files" box, in the "Named:" field, type USBFDD.SYS.
- Verify that the (C:) drive is displayed in the "Look in:" field and click the Find Now button.
- In the search results section, right-click the Usbfdd.sys file.
- From the menu, click Delete.
- At the "Confirm File Delete" box, click Yes.
- Click the X in the top-right corner to close the "Find: Files named usbfdd.sys" box.
The USBFDD.EXE file can now be reinstalled. Be sure to reinstall it before the USB-Floppy Disk Drive is reconnected to the notebook.
What this drivers do:
The original USB Floppy disk drive drivers that ship with some VAIO® notebooks do not allow the McAfee® VirusScan application to create an Emergency Boot Disk.
This utility installs updated drivers that resolve this issue.
Important Note:
- Before installing this update, be sure that the system has a USB Floppy Disk Drive connected and the system is also connected to AC power.
- To ensure that no other program interferes with the installation, save all work and close all other programs. The Taskbar should be clear of applications before proceeding.
